Drug Resistance

Drug resistance is the reduction in effectiveness of a drug such as antimicrobial in curing a disease or condition. More commonly, the term is used in the context of resistance acquired by pathogens surviving the attacks of antibiotics by genetically changing itself, making drugs ineffective. When an organism is resistant to more than one drug, it is said to be multidrug resistant.

Drug resistance has become a grim medical problem anywhere and, in many occasions, the cause of death to patients affected. For example, Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is a form of TB that does not respond to the standard treatments using first-line drugs, causing hundred and thousands deaths every year world-wide. Hence, detection of drug resistant pathogen is one of the critical steps to identify the nature of pathogens and choose the right treatment from the very beginning.
